Passing your driving test and getting your full driving licence is a pivotal moment in your life. The opportunities that are opened up are huge.
However, many people fail to prepare properly and fail when really they should not.
You undoubtedly will be taking driving lessons with your experienced driving instructor. If you are not using the services of a driving school you should seriously consider it, even if it's just for some pointers. Family and friends can help a lot but they are unlikely to be experienced in preparing people for their driving test.
Understand how the driving test works and what to expect. Get as much driving experience as you can, HOWEVER, make it relevant. Just making the same regular journey could do you more harm than good. Have a plan when you drive. What are you trying to achieve? What will your route be? Just driving to college is not enough. Pick up a manoeuvre or two on the drive. Go to the places you find hard or don't understand.
Learn the Showme/Tell me questions and how they fit into the test.
Do Mock tests with your driving instructor to get used to what it's like. If you don't you may find that sitting next to an examiner on the day with that horrible green test report in front of them may prove to be too bigger shock to deliver a good drive.
Remember the old saying "Fail to prepare and you are preparing to fail". It may be a bit patronising but it's true.
Put in the work and you should pass first time.
What Do You See?
Avoid a common Mistake on Driving Tests
Judging the pace to drive at can be difficult when on your driving test. During your driving lessons your driving instructor will help you with this. However, it's not uncommon for people to suddenly drive way too slow on their driving test which will result in failure. Your driving test examiner is looking for you to make "reasonable progress". It's unlikely on a natonal speed limit country road you will need to get to 60mph but driving slowly when it's perfectly safe to go quicker is not a good idea.
Work on the correct pace during your driving lessons and you will pass your driving test first time.
Watch out for Motorcycles
Meeting Traffic on Driving Test
When you go for your driving test you should be well prepared and have had lots of practice. You will have encountered meeting other traffic on many occasions during your driving lessons and dealt with them safely.
However, on driving test it can be easy to do something that you would not normally do. Many candidates have failed their driving test because they continued into a meeting situation where they should have waited.
When you encounter a meeting situation and think "I think it's ok to keep going" it is time to rethink. It may well be ok to continue but a moments thought could well save your test. Practice this thought process with your driving instructor.

During Your Driving Test
During your driving test you will drive following directions from the driving test examiner or following roads signs or a Sat Nav.
If you take the wrong route or find yourself in the wrong lane, DON'T PANIC. If it's not safe to change to the correct route then continue on the route you are on. You will not be penalised for taking the wrong route safely, the examiner will find a way back.

Warnings Lights on during driving Tests
Changes to rules for vehicles used for driving tests From Monday 4 June 2018, you will not be able to use any vehicle (not including motorbikes) for a driving test if:
its engine management light is on, or if the light does not work its reversing lights don’t work (this only applies to cars first used from 1 September 2009) If the engine management light comes on during a driving test, and the car appears to be working normally, the test will continue. The driving examiner will tell you this happened at the end of the test.
New rules reflect MOT changes
The new rules reflect changes made to the MOT test on 20 May 2018. These defects are now classed as major defects in the MOT, and cause the car to fail the test.
Independent Driving on driving Test
The driving test includes 20 minutes of independent driving. Most candidates (4 out of 5) will follow a sat nav, whilst the remainder will follow road signs and/or directions from the examiner. If the examiner does not place a sat nav in the car then you know you are going to follow signs/directions. This is to allow you to plan your journey and position the car appropriately in good time. Independent driving should not cause you too much concern if you have got used to using a sat nav and following directions during your driving lessons prior to your test, your driving instructor will help you with this.
Don't worry if you go the wrong way SAFELY, it's not a problem, the examiner will find a way round and no fault will have been been committed. If you are unsure of directions you can ask the examiner. They will clarify directions but not answer questions on how to deal with traffic situations (that's your job!).
The independent driving could start at any point during the test including the very beginning. The examiner will operate the sat nav, you do not have to even touch it. If you can't see the screen or hear directions ask the examiner to adjust it.
Get plenty of practice and you should not find it a problem.
